Has anyone done a Dog Walk Fundraiser?

This week one of my fundraising ezine readers wrote to ask me if I knew anything about doing a Dog Walk for a fundraiser.

I didn't. I've never been involved with one, or even lived near where one was scheduled.

So... if you have information to share about how to set it up, things to be careful of, etc. Please share!

Oh - by the way, if you'd like to get that ezine, you can go to www.marte-cliff.com and opt-in. You'll find a box on the top left - when you enter your name and email address, you'll be asked which ezine you want. You can have one - or all 3 if you like!

I've only ever participated in one, but there were thousands of dogs there and they had booths set up. It was great fun for dogs and humans alike. I did the one though the SPCA of Texas. Their website is spca.org - you might be able to contact someone there about the details of running it.

Thanks Lauren.

I've often wondered if all the dogs got along in a situation like that. Seems like it could get a little chaotic if one happened to take a dislike to another one.

Like Lauren, I usually attend one every year by the Greater Miami Humane Society that's a big event with tents, sponsors, and give-away prize raffle, in addition to the dog walk. But your friend can start small but it is a lot of work and requires weeks/months of planning. Here's what I recommend: 1- reach out to "pet" vendors for possible interest for sponsoring either a check to help with operating funds or big prize; 2select venue; be sure to inquire if any special permits are required.3-Have a website or create an instant blog to direct participants. 4- Design a donation or sponsor form. As a volunteer I ask my friends, family and coworkers to sponsor me and my dog for the walk. They can donate any amount.5- For the dog walk make sure there are volunteers stationed every 2 blocks and there's plenty of water bowls. There's many more details but these are the main items.

I used to organize major events so I can discuss more offline. Just send me email to christine.michaels@yahoo.com

Hi Marte, to comment on your comment, amazingly most dogs get along. Most dog owners know this is event for overall friendly dogs. But in Miami, the weather is pet friendly so we are used to taking our dogs with us to restaurants (outdoor eating of course) weekend trips and to outdoor shopping malls. Actually there are shopping centers that encourage it so they attract more business. Very smart!

Christine - thank you so much for all your good information!

When I took my Suzie to obedience and agility classes, the dogs generally got along. But sometimes a couple of them would take an instant dislike to each other.

Suzie absolutely couldn't stand one little white yappy dog who was in the class... and she and the instructor's dog shared a mutual dislike. She seemed to love everyone else, but those two brought out the aggressive side.

With regard to taking the dogs along - I've heard now of restaurants that cater specifically to people and their pets - have things on the menu for the pups as well as the people.

A smart idea, indeed!
